Amazon factories are under investigation

Selling through online platforms has become one of the trends today and it will continue and seize to exist until there will be another better way of selling but as of now, this is the greatest thing you can ever imagine. With just a few clicks and ticks and you are done. There are a lot of online shops or what they call as e-commerce business where they are licensed to conduct the business online.

Amazon is one of the top e-commerce shops in the world as of today. And it has been gaining a lot of sales compared to the brick and mortar stores. Amazon is an online shop which produces a wide variety of products and services. It is considered one of the top online selling stores in the world today. You can find anything on Amazon, be it the most needed product for the most unnecessary product you can easily find. Amazon does not only sell their products but as well supporting other small businesses by letting them sell their products as well.

Over the past years of Amazon reign, there have been many jobs offered to people who are lucky enough to have a stable career in the said company.  Amazon is a company made by builders and sellers and inventors. If you belong to one of those mentioned, then maybe you got the right skills for Amazon. This company is not a product-based company that does not have a high-quality standard but this company maintains a name that their products will sustain and last for years.

Amazon has built factories around the globe and one in China. But the recent news reported is that in China, the workers are assigned to make the Kindle e-reader but sad to say, based on the undergoing investigation for 9 months, the working environment is violating the Chinese law. During the 9 month investigation of the Chinese Labour Watch, the workers of the said company are forced to work an indefinite overtime, provided insufficient training and are exposed to an environment not safe enough for them. Another report mentioned that the workers are required to work more than 100 hours of monthly overtime during peak season plus they are also required to show up to their stations 10 minutes before their shift starts without compensation.

With a compensation of $3 per hour, some were required to work 14 days straight without a day off. According to the report of The Guardians, “All workers are subject to long hours and low wages, as wages are low, workers must rely on overtime hours to earn enough to maintain a decent standard of living.

Even the temporary workers who are just brought there to help in case of help need to work same with the regular workers. In this kind of case, the main organization responsible for this abuse is the dispatching company because the factory can just go ahead with the law abusing. “The Foxconn factory often exceeded the number of dispatch workers allowed, and those workers were asked to work ridiculous hours for less pay. Dispatch workers did not receive higher wages for overtime hours and were offered only unpaid sick leave, and were required to cover their own fees for a physical examination when starting work at the factory,” the report of The Guardian claimed. The dispatch workers or the temporary workers only receive unpaid sick leave plus they will be the one to pay their medical fees. And their living areas were even worse, the dorms do not have emergency exits and did not have fire extinguishers or other basic safety precautions. The China Labor Watch said “Amazon has the ability to not only ensure its supplier factories respects the rights of workers but also that there is equal pay for equal work. Amazon’s profits have come at the expense of workers who labor in appalling working conditions and have no choice but to work excessive overtime hours to sustain a livelihood.”

In a statement released by the Foxconn company, they said that “We are carrying out a full investigation of the areas raised by that report, and if found to be true, immediate actions will be taken to bring the operations into compliance with our Code of Conduct.

Because of the report made by the China Labor Watch, the Foxconn’s company was then subjected to a 9-month investigation. The report noted staffs were also receiving verbal abuse. Amazon commented that they have audited Foxconn’s administration on March and said that over time and use of dispatch workers were “issues of concern.” They said in a statement “We immediately requested a corrective action plan from Foxconn, and we are monitoring on Foxconn’s response and compliance with our Supplier Code of Conduct. We are committed to ensuring that these issues are resolved.”

Foxconn replied on the report that they are working hard to comply with all relevant laws and regulations where it operates and conducts regular audits. If infractions are identified, they will work to immediately rectify them. There were past reports against Foxconn. In 2013, there were 3 workers who committed suicide at their Chinese factory. In 2010, there were 17 workers suicide and they are all pointing their fingers towards the military management of the company.

In the recent months, even Amazon was subjected to criticisms because of their labor practices in the United States. A recent report stated that “their warehouses are considered to be one of the most dangerous workplaces in America, and its warehouse workers often live off food stamps.” Amazon got away with paying workers less by making them clock off before they faced security lines to leave the building according to a report in Bloomberg. In the United Kingdom, the workers are using bottles to pee in instead of going to the comfort room to prevent taking minutes long to go to the cr. In Taiwan, Foxconn there is the world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer plus it has more than a million employees.
