Amazon X Seattle’s tax proposal

Selling through online platforms has become one of the trends today and it will continue and seize to exist until there will be another better way of selling but as of now, this is the greatest thing you can ever imagine. With just a few clicks and ticks and you are done. There are a lot of online shops or what they call as e-commerce business where they are licensed to conduct the business through online. Amazon is one of the top e-commerce shops in the world as of today. And it has been gaining a lot of sales compared to the brick and mortar stores. Amazon is an online shop which produces a wide variety of products and services. It is considered as one of the top online selling stores in the world today.

You can find anything on Amazon, be it the most needed product for the most unnecessary product you can easily find. Amazon does not only sell their products but as well supporting other small businesses by letting them sell their products as well. Over the past years of Amazon reign, there have been many jobs offered to people who are lucky enough to have a stable career in the said company.  Amazon is a company made by builders and sellers and inventors. If you belong to one of those mentioned, then maybe you got the right skills for Amazon. This company is not a product-based company that does not have a high-quality standard but this company maintains a name that their products will sustain and last for years.

Because of the large occupancy of Amazon worldwide, there is a wide number of the city where Amazon can be worked at such as Seattle. Seattle is a great place to work at and even a wonderful place to live in. Corporate offices are mainly located in the heart of Seattle’s South Lake Union district, it is even where Amazon’s corporate office is located. It is just a few blocks away from the Lake Union waterfront and the new Museum of History and Industry. Because Seattle is known as a center where diverse cultures can be found, it has a lot of international citizens from hundreds of cities and dozens of nations around the world. Because of the wide area of population, where you get to meet a lot of foreigners, you can also find a wide variety of sports and even access to some recreational activities you cannot find every day. Seattle even has public transportation easily ready for everyday transportation. And the city is very easy to go to.

But there will always be a downside to every improved and great city. The city council of Seattle planned to implement a raise in the tax of big companies settled there for a project to build houses in Seattle. Such as Amazon and other big companies. This will also have an impact on the employees of such companies. The city council planned to implement a “head tax” where employees will have to pay an additional tax for the said project. Because of this, Amazon was forced to stop construction at one office tower and move to shift 7,000 jobs to other locations. And so, because of the fear of the workers that Amazon will eventually give up its business in the city, they have used this to make a rally against the said plan. The tax would be imposed on the largest for-profit employers in the city, about 500 businesses in all. Were it to be enacted, it could generate, by estimates, about $75m a year for affordable housing and homeless services.

The tax resolution will be passed on May 14, 2018, but may not be implemented because of the lack of support of the mayor itself. In a statement by Mayor Jenny Durkan last May 11, 2018. She said that the $500-per-employee tax will hurt the workers and that she will support it. Instead, she proposed to have a limited carrying tax of $250 per worker charge. But do not put the blame on the city council. They have just suggested it because of the increasing number of homeless people around the city. Proof of people living in the tents and shacks along the freeways and in the city parks. According to city council member Teresa Mosqueda last May 11, 2018 “We have a public health crisis. People are sleeping outside every day. Frankly, people are dying in our streets. The unified message from city council today is that we need more revenue to build shelter and housing.” “A progressive tax on businesses most benefiting from this growth is our best option because we already rely heavily upon regressive property and sales taxes that hit everyone equally,” council member Lisa Herbold said by email.

The fight between the tax has led Amazon to pause the construction on Block 18, a 405,000 sq ft office building at the middle of the Seattle campus, and reconsidering a lease on another downtown tower.  Amazon vice-president Drew Herdener said by email “ “Pending the outcome of the head tax vote by City Council, Amazon has paused all construction planning on our Block 18 project in downtown Seattle and is evaluating options to sub-lease all space in our recently leased Rainier Square building.” According to Monty Anderson, executive secretary of the Seattle Building & Construction Trades Council, “The ability of us to work is based on companies wanting to come here and build. That’s just a fact for us,” said Anderson, who leads a collection of trade unions representing 10,500 workers. In ’08 and ’09, when the economy tanked and my members were homeless, drug addicted, committing suicide, it was a tragedy.

Now people are building here, and we’re seeing an uptick of our membership into the middle class. Don’t take that away from us.” he was concerned that the tax would drive away the city’s Amazon-driven building boom, which has made Seattle the nation’s construction crane capital since July 2016. But if ever, everybody will forbid, the resolution will take effect on  January 2019.
